American Gangster Movie Review

American Gangster Review

In this American Gangster review I’ll talk about who Frank Lucas was. Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) was the quiet driver, body guard and collector for Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, one of the most famous Harlem gangsters, but when ‘Bumpy’ dies suddenly Lucas takes his life in to his own hands. Lucas looks at the power structure of his area and uses his power to get to the top of it.

Lucas goes to the top of the tree, buying dope from the manufacturer rather than the supplier, he travels to Bangkok using his cousin in the military as a middle man to go to the jungle and buy his ‘product’. Obviously finding a way to get it back to the U.S without getting caught was going to be a bit of a mission. The mission was taken on by buying certain people from the military, M.P’s, pilot’s and some of the air force.

Frank Lucas brought back his product and turned it into Blue Magic, the only 100% pure dope selling it at a cheaper price than hiscompetition and supposedly making over $300’000 profit on each Kilo.

Richie Roberts – The Honest Cop

Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) Well known and dis-liked for being the only cop who would do such a thing as find nearly a million dollars in the back of a vehicle and then hand it back in the city because it was the right thing to do. Roberts passes his BAR test and takes an un-relentless pursuit of the criminal who has been bringing ‘Blue Magic’ to the streets.

Over exaggerated story?

Some facts are greatly mis-leading compared to the truth straight from the horses mouth in the interview Frank Lucas did with the New York magazine in August, 2000 called the Return of Superfly.

The good thing about the movie is that it is a well written story and depicts Lucas and Roberts down to a ‘T’. Manerisms and all are included in the movie which does add a lot of interest.

Did it make a good movie?

It sure did! I am slightly biased with being a massive fan of gangster movies whether it be mafia or other wise, however putting aside the ex-ageration of the story the movie was very intriguing. Ridley Scott is excellent at putting together a movie, and seeing him work with Russell Crowe again was awesome.

It is a pretty long movie, and the cinema was packed out with only a few seats left. Usually I fidget like mad at long movies, Lord of the Rings being one of my most fidgeted but this was a good one that I thoroughly enjoyed and would definitely advise everyone to go and see it.

What’s coming next?

Cuba Gooding Jr plays Nicky Barnes in the movie, another high-roller who likes the high life, way to much!

Nicky Barnes was one of Lucas’s competitors and they never saw eye-to-eye and now Nicky Barnes is being protrayed in a movie called Mr Untouchable. Lucas and Barnes were quite inter-linked and ran in the same circles so it will be interesting to see the difference in stories from two different sides.

Overall Rating: 4/5

  1. American Gangster reminds me yet again what a versatile actor Russel Crowe is? plus it’s pretty clever how Ridley Scott makes us love the bad guy and dislike the good guy only to subtly flip that around by the end of the movie.
